Direct, focused phonics is taught every day in Reception and key stage 1. 

From phase 2, each session follows the format: recap taught phonemes, teach new phoneme, apply new phoneme. 

Children are taught the sound of each letter and learn to blend these sounds together. 

Children are taught to decode words by sounding out the phonemes. 

Reading books are matched to the phonemes and common exception words that have been taught, while they are learning to read. 

A precision teach approach is used by teachers and teaching assistants to provide extra practice throughout the day for the children who need additional support.
